Ihan kassalla
Our research* revealed that income security and unemployment funds are surprisingly unfamiliar to many young people. That is why we wanted to facilitate discussion about important “adult matters” and remind people why it is worth talking about them in good time. The Ihan kassalla mini-series humorously brings young people and parents together so that no one has to be “Ihan kassalla” when it is really not worth it.
(Ihan kassalla is a Finnish word play. Literally it means being at the cash register (or at the fund) but figuratively “ihan kassalla” means being totally lost or clueless of what is happening.)
The three-part miniseries Ihan kassalla navigates between the uncertainties of working life, financial matters, and plans for the future. The series tackles adult issues with gentle irony and reveals that, in the end, everyone has their turn being “Ihan kassalla”.
The miniseries stars top Finnish actors Juha Kukkonen and Ronja Keiramo. It is directed by Iiro Hokkanen and written by award-winning Finnish screenwriter Anna Brotkin.

Episode 1

“Fund would have been worth it” – Jonna had luck, but the story could have ended badly
3 things you need to know
Planning ahead is essential! In order to receive daily allowances from the fund, you must have joined the fund at least one year before becoming unemployed and fulfilled the working condition during that period. It is therefore too late to join the fund when you receive a layoff or termination notice.
If you become unemployed or are laid off and are not a member of the fund, you can apply for basic daily allowance from Kela. It is the same for everyone, regardless of salary, and amounts to only about 800 € per month.
If you belong to an unemployment fund, you can apply for earnings-related daily allowance from the fund. The amount depends on how much you earned before becoming unemployed. For example, with a salary of 2 500 €, the earnings-related allowance is already over 1 700 € per month! You can use the daily allowance calculator to calculate how much earnings-related daily allowance you would receive.
Whatever your education, profession, or field of work, you are welcome to become a member! We are an independent operator with no ties to trade unions.
With YTK, you can choose to become a fund member, which gives you income security and job search support, or you can add YTK Worklife membership, which also gives you access to a lawyer for employment issues, accident insurance for your free time, a wide range of online training services, and much more! You won’t find a package like this at this price anywhere else!

*) Survey
The YTK Omnibus Survey 2025 mapped out who the employees are who do not belong to an unemployment fund. We also investigated why they do not belong to a fund and what could motivate them to join. The survey was conducted in early 2025, and 302 employees who were not members of a fund responded.
Those who do not belong to an unemployment fund are more often men, people under 35, people living alone, and Finns with low incomes and lower levels of education. The most common reasons for not joining are that the fund is not considered useful or that the membership fee is considered expensive. Many also say that they have not thought about it or do not know enough about the funds, which is particularly evident among young people and women. This led us to launch a campaign highlighting the importance of fund membership.
Why was this campaign created?
We have noticed that many young people do not have a very solid understanding of how earnings-related unemployment security works in Finland. We also have research data on this. Earnings-related unemployment security is only available through the unemployment fund, and the prerequisite for receiving it is that you join the fund in good time. The extended working condition requires more foresight and preparation—in other words, those boring adult things. We created this series because we want to remind people of these necessities with gentle humor.
Who is this campaign intended for?
The series is aimed primarily at young adults, but it also serves as a gentle reminder to their parents. The humor in the series strikes a balance between the two.
