YTK or some other fund and union? Compare what you get and at what cost

Switching unemployment funds may seem like a simple matter of comparing prices. But if, in addition to income security, you want help with workplace issues and other employment-related services, simply comparing fund dues doesn’t tell the whole story.

So compare the total package: what coverage and services you receive over the course of a year, and what they cost in total.

At YTK, you can combine your unemployment fund membership with YTK Work Life Services. This way, you get income security and support services for various work-related situations all in one package.

Unemployment fund or security throughout your entire working life?

The basic mission of all unemployment funds is the same: they ensure their members’ income security. That’s why, instead of just choosing a fund, you should consider what else you want from your membership.

For example, do you need:

  • membership that stays with you even if you change jobs or industries
  • income security if you become unemployed or are laid off
  • legal assistance with workplace issues
  • insurance coverage
  • help with job hunting
  • training to adapt to changes in the workforce

When comparing options, find out: How much does the overall package cost that provides the coverage you need?

Trade union membership fees vary depending on the union and the member’s salary. On average, union membership fees are approximately 300-450 € per year. Some union membership fees also include the unemployment fund membership fee.

What is the difference between YTK and other unemployment funds?

The terms and conditions of earnings-related unemployment benefits are based on legislation. This means that all funds pay earnings-related daily allowances in accordance with the same laws and guidelines. Therefore, when choosing an unemployment fund, it is also worth considering other differences.

Compare at least these:

1. Membership fees and invoicing

How much does membership cost per year?

Unemployment fund membership fees vary from year to year. The membership fee is primarily influenced by the unemployment rate among members, so fees are always set on a year-by-year basis.

YTK invoices the membership fee once a year. It’s simple and straightforward. Many other unemployment funds deduct the membership fee directly from a member’s paycheck as part of the union dues paid from the monthly salary (including vacation pay and overtime pay). It’s worth checking how much you pay in total each year.

2. Other services

What do you need to arrange separately if, for example, you want legal assistance with workplace issues?

YTK Fund members can join YTK Worklife for an annual fee of just a few dozen euros and, through that membership, receive legal assistance with employment and wage disputes. Through a labor union, similar services cost several hundred euros a year. With YTK Worklife’s Legal Assistance service, you can quickly get help from a lawyer or payroll specialist when you need it – without any middlemen.

3. Industry neutrality

Can your membership continue even if you change your profession or industry?

YTK is open to workers in all professions and industries. This means you’re free to work in different fields – your YTK membership stays with you. Many other funds have occupational restrictions.

As by far the largest unemployment fund in Finland, we also have a broad understanding of Finnish working life, free from political ties. Through our data and the voices of our members, we highlight the pain points in working life and unemployment security, and we actively seek to influence legislation for the benefit of our members.

4. Total price

How much do income security and the other services you need cost in total?

At YTK, you get a smart package at the most affordable total price – just a little over 100 euros a year!

5. Do you really need everything you’re paying for?

Also, think about which services you actually need. There’s no point in paying for things you don’t need.

YTK or a labor union?

An unemployment fund and a labor union are different things and have different roles.

If income security and practical assistance in various work-related situations are most important to you, you should check whether you can get the services you need through a combination of the YTK Unemployment Fund and YTK Worklife.

If, on the other hand, you value the other roles of a labor union or the services offered by a specific union, be sure to take those into account as well.

The key isn’t to choose the option with the most services. The key is to avoid paying for things you don’t need and to get the services you actually need at a reasonable price.
