Every YTK Worklife member has free access to Redi job search coaching, which includes both independent study and personal guidance. However, many people are a little skeptical about coaching – is it really useful? Mervi Tikkanen, a coach at Cimson’s training services, has seen firsthand the insights and progress that participants in coaching can gain.
What do people need most help with when looking for work?
One of the most common reasons for seeking job search coaching is to gain new perspectives on one’s job search and receive feedback on one’s CV and job applications. Many people say that they have never received an external assessment of their application documents – and unfortunately, they don’t get much feedback from employers either.
“Sometimes participants already have a specific job in mind. In that case, we can provide targeted feedback and refine the application specifically for that position,” Mervi Tikkanen promises.
What are the biggest challenges in job hunting from a coach’s perspective?
Surprisingly, many people have not yet taken advantage of one of the most effective job search tools: hidden jobs. The majority of job vacancies are not advertised publicly.
The program covers concrete methods, such as how to contact employers, who to call, and how to start a conversation naturally in order to find hidden jobs.
“If your job search isn’t producing results, it’s time to change something. We discuss this together,” Tikkanen reminds us.
Often, the challenge lies in articulating one’s own skills. The coaching identifies what skills you already have and teaches you how to communicate them convincingly. This is important regardless of your field or educational background.
“Job search coaching is not just for highly educated people. It is useful in all fields.”
When should you participate in job search coaching?
Participation is recommended at all stages of the job search, but if possible, you should start job search coaching right at the beginning of your job search. This will help you get your job search off to a smooth start.
“Many people say afterwards that they should have come earlier. There’s certainly no harm in getting coaching – and in the best case scenario, you’ll find a new direction for your job search.”
What would you say to people who have been looking for work for a long time with no results?
Many job seekers are very frustrated at the moment. Competition is fierce, lots of job applications have been sent out, but there are no results and disappointment is starting to weigh heavily. If you feel that your job search is at a standstill and you haven’t tried job search coaching yet, you should definitely give it a try: a coach can be a valuable listener and encourager. They know the world of work and can offer a realistic but hopeful perspective.
“Even though the job market is tough, we coaches see people getting hired all the time. Opportunities can sometimes pop up in surprising places if you keep your eyes and mind open.”
