WORKING TOGETHER FOR THE COMMON GOOD

Literacy is a skill for working life and society

Reading is worthwhile. It has undeniable benefits in everyday life and also in working life. Reading helps us to concentrate better and absorb information. It develops negotiation skills and empathy.

Good literacy skills make it easier for us to function as part of society, evaluate information, and engage in constructive discussion. We are able to critically evaluate different sources and reject false information.

Right now, however, there is concern that literacy skills are declining and becoming more differentiated. Some people read a lot, while others read very little or only when they have to. The decline in literacy is already evident in the workplace. For example, spelling, understanding work and safety instructions, or even coping with everyday life can be challenging.

The most important thing in sparking enthusiasm for reading is to find your own way and path to the joy of reading. How could you succeed in this?

At the end of January, we organized a webinar for our members on the importance of literacy. We discussed the topic with Doctor of Social Sciences Jenni Haukio, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at WSOY.

You can watch a recording of the webinar throughout February. You can find it on OmaYTK.

Side effects for you too?

As a member of YTK, we help you read more so that you can succeed better in your working life.

“Important: don’t listen to snobs who define what is real literature and what is trash. So don’t force yourself to read ‘good’ books, but go for something easy first.”

Let’s share our reading tips!

What books have you read or listened to recently? What about everyone else? Let’s list the books in a shared pot and see how many books and pages YTK members read during the year! Mark your books and pick up some new reading tips at the same time.

You still have time: Take advantage of a 40% discount at the Kirja online store

As a member of YTK Worklife, you can get a whopping 40% discount at the Kirja.fi online store until the end of February! You will find new releases, classics, and a wide selection of non-fiction books, as well as books for children and young adults.

When you join YTK Worklife in addition to YTK Fund, you also have access to many other services and benefits. Would you like to have your own lawyer, leisure accident insurance, and hotel and spa discounts?

By logging in to the OMA+ service, you can check whether you are already a member. If you are unable to log in, you are not yet a member of YTK Worklife.

WORKING TOGETHER FOR THE COMMON GOOD

YTK takes part in the Kesätyö.fi service – over 10,000 jobs for young people

Are you or someone you know looking for a summer job? The brand new Kesätyö.fi service offers over 10,000 summer jobs across Finland. You can apply for and get jobs even without any previous work experience.

At YTK, we want to support young people on their path to working life, which is why we are the main partner in the Kesätyö service, produced by the Children and Youth Foundation.

Make sure your friends don’t get left out

Remember to tell your friends and family about YTK! It’s worth joining an unemployment fund when you’re 18 and working, even if it’s just part-time or during the summer. You can bring up the subject with the help of the humorous Ihan kassalla mini-series!

New for you: Search for jobs based on your skills

Are you looking for a job? Try the AI tool for job searching, currently in the testing phase, available on OmaYTK! What makes this tool unique is that you can search for jobs based on your skills, rather than traditional job titles. The service is AI-based, which is why its grammar is still a little off in places. Don’t let that bother you, but help us improve the tool by giving us feedback.

Take advantage of other YTK Spark services when you are looking for a job. Spark makes your job search smoother and easier!

Part-time work is also worthwhile

Part-time work combined with adjusted earnings-related allowance generates more income than unemployment benefits alone. Working also keeps you actively involved in the labor market and supports your job search. See how adjusted earnings-related allowance works and why it is worth accepting work.

When can I take my summer vacation and what compensation will I receive during that time?

How are vacation days accrued and when can you take a vacation? We will also tell you what kind of compensation you will receive during your vacation.

Under 25 and without a degree? This obligation applies to you

If you are under 25 and do not yet have a post-secondary education, you must apply for at least two study places in programs starting the following fall in order to retain your right to unemployment benefits. You can apply for study places in the spring joint application process, for example. It is also a good idea to inform any young family members about this obligation!
