After summer, returning to the work routine can feel surprisingly overwhelming. Your calendar fills up quickly, messages and interruptions come constantly, and you have to find your focus again.
If you find yourself feeling more tired, distracted, or irritable than usual, you may be experiencing mental overload. Many people realize just how overloaded their brains actually are when they return to their daily routines and work rhythms.
The good news is that you can support your brain’s well-being with small daily actions.
Recognize the signs of burnout and read the effective tips from Kaisa Soininen, an exercise psychologist at Yogaia, part of YTK’s workplace member benefits, on how to incorporate small moments into your day that give your brain a chance to recover.
The brain is not designed for constant stress
After a vacation, many people expect to return to their daily routines feeling energetic and productive. Yet, after just a few weeks, things can start to feel surprisingly overwhelming. Modern daily life strains the brain in ways it wasn’t designed to handle:
- interruptions
- a constant flood of information
- screen time
- lack of recovery time
- the feeling that you should be available all the time.
Overload doesn’t always manifest as a complete breakdown. Often, it shows up in small signs.
1. Your concentration keeps breaking
You find yourself rereading the same message. Your thoughts wander. It feels hard to focus on one thing.
When your brain is overwhelmed, its ability to filter out distractions weakens.
A small daily practice: Try taking a screen-free microbreak every 60–90 minutes. Even just a few minutes of movement, deep breathing, or looking away from the screen helps your brain recover.
2. You’re tired, but you can’t calm down
Your body feels tired, but your mind is still racing. In the evening, it’s hard to slow down or fall asleep.
This may be a sign that your nervous system is in a state of overstimulation.
A small daily practice: Lengthen your exhalation for a moment during the day. For example, a calm breathing rhythm of 4 seconds in and 6 seconds out helps slow things down.
3. You’re forgetting things
Why did I come into this room? What was I supposed to do? Where are those keys?
An overloaded brain prioritizes survival and reaction – not remembering.
A small daily practice: Don’t try to remember everything in your head. Write things down and do one thing at a time. Your brain needs space.
4. You get irritated more easily than usual
Even small things start to feel overwhelming. Your patience wears thin quickly.
Often, it’s not that you’re “bad at handling stress,” but rather that your brain’s capacity is maxed out.
A small daily practice: Even light exercise helps your nervous system recover. A short walk, some stretching, or a breathing exercise can do more than constantly trying and pushing yourself.
5. Rest doesn’t seem to be enough anymore
The weekend goes by quickly, but you don’t really feel refreshed. You rest, but you don’t recover.
Many people try to solve this by resting more, even though the brain also needs active recovery: movement, breathing, relaxation, and nervous system regulation.
A small daily practice: Don’t wait for the perfect moment to recover. Even a 5–10 -minute workout helps break the cycle of stress.
Brain wellness is built on small moments
Your brain doesn’t need a complete lifestyle overhaul. Often, what matters most are the small daily moments when your nervous system gets a chance to calm down and recover.
Yogaia’s Brain Boost program is designed specifically for this: to fit right into your busy daily life. The program includes short exercises that help calm the nervous system, support concentration, and boost recovery.
