Occupational health care

All employers, regardless of the size of their organization or the form or duration of the employment relationship, are obliged to arrange preventive occupational health care. Occupational health care is a service arranged by the employer, which above all supports the employee at different stages of their career. It helps to maintain health, work ability, and well-being, and prevents work-related illnesses and stress. Through occupational health care, employees have access to expert help and preventive support that helps make working life safer and more sustainable.

The employer’s obligation to arrange occupational health care for its employees is stipulated in the Occupational Health Care Act (1383/2001).

Employee rights and benefits

In Finland, employers have a legal obligation to provide occupational health care. It is free of charge for employees, and its content is planned according to the needs of the work and the working environment.

Occupational health care can be provided, for example:

  • through a health center
  • as services provided by a private medical center
  • as a service provided by the employer

How does occupational health care benefit employees?

The greatest benefit of occupational health care is that it supports employees in their everyday lives, especially when their well-being or health is under strain.

Employees receive:

  • Preventive support for health and work ability, such as health examinations, work ability assessments, and early intervention in problems.
  • Help with managing stress. Risk factors are identified and solutions are offered to reduce physical or mental stress.
  • Security for your career, from pre-employment medical examinations to work ability support measures at the end of your career.
  • A confidential discussion partner. A multidisciplinary team (occupational health physician, occupational psychologist, occupational physiotherapist, etc.) is available to employees.
  • The opportunity to influence your own well-being. Surveys and assessments, among other things, can be used to find support measures that are suitable for the employee.

Occupational health care objectives from the employee’s perspective

The core of occupational health care is to help employees stay healthy and able to work. It helps to:

  • maintain and promote personal health and well-being
  • ensure a safe and healthy working environment
  • prevent illnesses and accidents before they occur
  • support mental well-being and the functioning of the work community

Trust and data protection

Employee information is secure in occupational health care. Health information is confidential, and employers do not have access to it without a valid reason or the employee’s consent. This ensures that you can seek help and support from occupational health care with peace of mind.
